The Sand Rammer is used to prepare a standard AFS 2 in. x 2 in. (Metric 50 mm x 50 mm) cylindrical sand specimen for compression, shear, splitting, deformation and tensile tests. In the ceramics industry, the Sand Rammer can also be used to determine the compactability of standard molding sands.
Through preparation and compactability foundry sands fully develop their important mechanical-physical properties for measuring characteristics of a sand test specimen. Reliability and reproducibility of the values measured depend completely on the manner of its preparation.
The sand to be tested is taken from the molding line and placed into the specimen tube. A well-defined ramming energy is applied to compact the sand filling of the specimen tube into a test sample. Two measurement scales are provided on the stem of the Sand Rammer. One scale is for measuring compactability and another for measuring the final specimen height. The scales can also be used to determine the proper sample weight required for preparation of a standard sand specimen.
