2016 Report on the Peter L. Simpson Memorial Fund

ne-enginIn 2009 Simpson created the Peter L. Simpson Memorial Fund with a donation of $250,000.00 in support of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL USA (see https://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/ ).  The fund supports education programs, research and provides financial aid for students.  ME department chair Kevin Lynch recently provided Simpson with an update on how the funds were used in the last year.

Dr. Lynch reported that in 2016 the Peter L. Simpson Memorial Fund supported an eight week visit by Professor JN Reddy, the Oscar S. Wyatt Jr. Chair, Regents Professor, and Distinguished Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University.  Professor Reddy is a highly accomplished scholar and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.  On April 13th, 2016 Professor Reddy delivered a well-attended Simpson Lecture “on Non-Local and Non-Classical Continuum Mechanics Theories in Solid Mechanics.”  During his two-month stay at Northwestern he interacted with a number of mechanical engineering faculty and students.  This kind of interaction yields dividends for Northwestern in several ways: first, a highly respected scholar comes away from his experience at Northwestern with an increased understanding of the outstanding people and research conducted at Northwestern thereby furthering the reputation of the department.  Second, the interactions with faculty can lead to future funded collaborations.  Third, the students have a chance to interact with another leader in the field of mechanical engineering which can be very useful to them in their future careers.

Simpson is proud of our relationship with the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University and looks forward to continuing our efforts to support the advancement of engineering knowledge and the development of the next generation of engineering leaders.
